Profmed Medical Aid
Profmed Medical Aid is not a medical aid scheme for everyone and that is not a matter of opinion, it's a fact. The medical aid plans made available via Profmed are offered only to those who have obtained a minimum of a four-year degree or equivalent from a technical university and are currently employed and some eligible students who already have a four year degree and are enrolled in a graduate studies program.
The company bills its products as schemes 'tailored to suit the lifestyle of professionals' and the demographic is certainly a younger one as very few older South Africans meet the company's membership criteria.
Basic Medical Aid Options
In order to become a member of any of Profmed's medical aid schemes you do have to apply and be accepted - with acceptance being based mainly on the verification of qualifying academic criteria - and once that process is over the potential new member is then asked to pick a specific plan that best suits their needs.
Profmed currently offer five different medical aids; Pro Pinnacle, Pro Secure Plus, Pro Secure, ProActive Plus and ProActive. The most comprehensive of all - and therefore also the most expensive - Pro Pinnacle, offers a level of coverage very similar to that offered by more extensive traditional medical insurance plans. It provides the highest level of tariff reimbursement for hospital stays and GP visits and, unlike any of the other plans, provides 80% coverage for costlier in office procedures such as MRIs and CT scans.
The levels of coverage decrease from there, but each of them, even the 'lowest level' ProActive Plan, does tend to offer more coverage for preventative medicine than most other medical schemes and the maternity benefits are more comprehensive than one might expect from a medical aid scheme as well.
Profmed Medical Aid Special Programmes
After having chosen their basic plan level, for a small extra charge members can choose to enroll in the Multiply Wellness Programme. This is a programme actually administered by Momentum Insurance Company and offered to Profmed members at a discounted price.
As its name suggests, this is a scheme that rewards healthy practices and offers discounts and rewards to enrollees. Discounts include 80% off memberships at Planet Fitness or Virgin Active gym facilities, 50% off cycling equipment (including bikes themselves) from Cycle Lab stores, discounts on OTC medications from network pharmacies and even significant discounts on Mango flights.
Rewards are issued for things such as scheduling certain preventative tests, attending a gym fior a certain number of months (you'll have to prove you go though) and other 'wellness' activities and are normally 'paid' in Pick and Pay Smart Shopper points and/or movie passes for use at Nu Metro.
Profmed Medical Aid Extras
An easy, no nonsense claims system is something anyone appreciates in a medical aid scheme. Most of the time Profmed members won't have to do very much at all, as 80% of their approved providers bill the company electronically themselves. Should a member have to pay cash out of pocket up front though they can make a claim for reimbursement via email or, if they prefer, good old fashioned snail mail. Claims are usually paid on a fortnightly basis and funds must be deposited electronically into a member's bank account, as for fraud reasons cheques are no longer issued.
Profmed also offers a smartphone app (for iOS, Android and Blackberry) called Mobi App that puts many of the features of membership at the user's fingertips including a scannable electronic copy of their membership card, an ER locator, an interactive 'chat with a nurse' feature and more. The app is available free in the appropriate app store for your device.
