GetSavvi Health is a privately run firm founded by a pair of entrepreneurs who recognised the need for a reasonably priced alternative to traditional medical aid for those whose budget is tight but still need to ensure that they have proper healthcare coverage for themselves and their families.
By creating plans that 'bundle together' services that would usually be very expensive if paid for separately GetSavvi Health's aim is to offer coverage to as many people as possible. But exactly what do they have to offer?
Rather than offering a confusing array of medical plans at multiple price levels GetSavvi Health simplify things by offering just two basic plans; the comprehensive Primary Care plan and the Get Care plan.
The benefits offered by these plans do vary quite significantly. Although both will cover both an individual, their spouse and their children the Get Care plan may be best suited to a younger person who is in fairly good general health while for a growing family the far more comprehensive Primary Care plan potentially offers a better, although more costly, alternative.
Choosing a medical plan is never easy. No one wants to overpay for benefits they will never use, but on the other hand no one really wants to leave themselves open to huge bills and expensive surprises if they do become ill.
To help people make the best decision for them GetSavvi Health do offer a clear and easy to use comparison tool on their website that not only clearly states the main benefits and coverages of each plan but makes it easy to understand the difference between the two offerings at a glance.
Which plan is 'better'? That really does depend upon the needs of the people purchasing them. Both of the medical plans offered by GetSavvi Health cover access to a personal health care advisor via telephone, family funeral cover and professional and confidential HIV, Trauma and Assault Counselling on an as needed basis. And as previously mentioned, for a younger, healthier individual that may be all they need.
In order to gain access to more comprehensive benefits for GP visits, emergency care, medication and even dentistry benefits a consumer will need to consider the Primary Care Plan. This plan covers such things as well as offering the option of adding a hospital coverage plan for an additional fee.
Interestingly both plans offer additional benefits that are a little more unusual. Enrollees in either plan are offered an alternative therapy benefit that provides for up to R1500 worth of preventative wellness treatments such as massage or reiki, as well as a security benefit that will provide up to R1500 in coverage to pay for things like the replacement of broken locks and minor damages to property.
The Claims Process
Obviously having all of these benefits is of little use if they are hard to claim when you actually need them or if there are significant out of pocket costs to meet before being reimbursed. Technically, according to the firm, in order to make use of GetSavvi Health a consumer does not have to do anything; providing their medical insurance card to an in plan provider should be all that entity needs to bill the company directly themselves. Out of plan expenses may have to be claimed by the insured parties themselves though, which can be done via telephone or online.
It should be made clear that the GetSavvi Health plans are not traditional medical insurance plans and they should not really be compared to them. Instead they are medical aid plans designed to prevent catastrophic financial strain in the event of medical emergencies while also providing coverage for the kind of medical expenses that the average, relatively young, relatively healthy person might need.
